The day has arrived when you have booked your movers and are ready to move to your new home. However, even with professional help by your side, there are a few things local and long-distance movers would like you to know and do to make your move more smooth and more efficient. Here are some things you can do before moving day arrives.
What Movers Want You to Know Before Moving Day
Clear a pathway
The moving process will be easier if a pathway is cleared so workers can move around without problems. If you hire local movers without packing services, the best course is to place all packed and labeled boxes in one room, preferably the closest to the exit, but not blocking the exit. Your movers must load and unload heavy furniture in and from the truck. The boxes will be dealt with only after furniture and appliances are stored in the truck.
Clean everything before your movers arrive
Whether you are relocating to Frederick County or one block away, cleaning all your furniture, rugs, and appliances before movers arrive is an intelligent thing to do. There is nothing worse than carrying smelly items near your face, and you don’t want to have dirty things in your new home. Also, you should defrost your freezer and clean your refrigerator.
Designate one room to be the safe room
If you are relocating with kids or pets, consider keeping them away from all the fuss. Also, you will need one place to keep your valuable items and the essentials you plan to bring with you. Designate one room in your home to be a safe space only you and your family can enter.
Carry important items with you
As we have mentioned above, you should carry a bag of essentials. Pack an essentials bag for you and your family with everything you need for everyday life in the days following your move. Also, pack all your essential items, such as documents, pictures, jewelry, and electronic devices you will need to have with you.
Prepare cash to tip your Maryland movers
You are not obliged to tip movers, but it is nice to do. Of course, if workers act unprofessionally, you don’t have to tip them. However, some rewards will be welcomed if you see they are doing a good job. Have cash on you to tip them once the job is done. Usually, 10-15% of the entire move cost should be reasonable. Depending on the size of your move and the number of workers you will have, around $3-5 hourly per mover should be enough.
Empty all the drawers
One of the moving hacks every professional will share with you is to empty your drawers before movers arrive. There is a good chance the movers will disassemble and reassemble your furniture on the spot, so you should empty all the cabinets and drawers beforehand. Carrying cabinets with filled drawers can be dangerous even if they don’t disassemble furniture.
Unplug appliances and other devices
If you want to speed things up and make life easier for you and your workers, a good thing would be to unplug all the appliances and electronic devices before workers arrive. Remove the cables that can be removed, roll them up, and duct tape them to their corresponding device. If the cable can not be removed from the device, tape it to the back.
Take a picture of all electrical devices connected to the T.V., so you know which cable goes where.
Reserve the elevator and parking space the night before
If you are renting an apartment, make sure you inform your neighbors that you are moving. Talk to your landlord, inform him about your move, and reserve the elevator for the big day so only you and your movers can use it for some time. This will save you a lot of time waiting for an elevator. Also, occupy at least two parking spaces closest to your building entrance the night before. This way, your movers will have less distance to carry your items.
Bonus tip for the eve of a winter move
If you are relocating in winter, there are some additional things you must do. The day is shorter, so you may need spotlights on your driveway or parking lot. Also, you will have to put salt on the path the night before, just in case of snow. Also, place sheets on your floor so you can keep your floor clean.
Last but not least - hydrate and don’t forget to eat
One of the things people so often forget about is eating and drinking water when they have big projects like moving their entire house. To prevent this from happening, order meals for you and the movers first thing in the morning. Book meals to arrive around noon so you can all eat together and make a break. And don’t forget to have a lot of water for everyone, and if you wish, you can leave a coffee maker in the open so you can make some coffee as well.
